Services

A complete Chinese medicine practice under one roof

Treatment plans typically combine two or three of these modalities, chosen after a full intake and diagnosis.

Acupuncture

Fine, sterile needles stimulate specific acupoints to improve the body's functions and promote its natural self-healing — a 3,000-year-old technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Sessions run a full hour and begin with a pulse and tongue diagnosis. Needling is gentle; most patients find treatment relaxing and many sleep through it. Moxibustion and electro-stimulation are added when the diagnosis calls for it.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Herbs prescribed as medical substances and combined into balanced, synergistic formulas for the individual — effective for a wide range of chronic and acute problems.

Formulas are adjusted at each visit as the presentation changes, and are screened against current medications. Granules, capsules, and traditional decoctions are all available.

Cupping Therapy

Suction cups applied to the skin draw blood flow into tight tissue to release muscle tension and relieve pain — a centuries-old technique, and not only for Olympic athletes.

Most often used for shoulder, neck, and low back tension, and at the first sign of a cold. Cups may leave temporary circular marks that fade within a few days.

Family Medicine & Pediatrics

Effective, gentle care for every member of the family across the whole span of life, from pediatric through geriatric.

Children are usually treated with Shoni Shin — a needle-free Japanese pediatric technique using gentle stroking and tapping tools — for ear infections, asthma, digestion, sleep, and immune support.

Nutrition & Lifestyle Counseling

Educational and nutritional guidance that supports brain function, repairs damaged body systems, and helps patients hold onto the gains treatment makes.

Recommendations are specific and practical — what to eat, when to sleep, how to move — and are revisited at follow-up visits rather than handed over once and forgotten.

Auricular Acupuncture

A microsystem on the external ear used to diagnose and treat conditions elsewhere in the body — particularly useful for pain, addiction, and stress.

Often paired with body acupuncture, and extended between visits with small ear seeds the patient presses at home to hold the treatment's effect.

The Practitioner

Patty Dautremont Johns, L.Ac., Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM)

Patty founded Boulder Acupuncture Clinic in 2000 and has practiced here ever since. She is nationally board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, licensed as an acupuncturist by the State of Colorado, and a member of the Acupuncture Association of Colorado.

Her practice is deliberately unhurried. Each appointment is a full hour with one patient — time enough to take a complete history, treat, and explain what the treatment is doing. Many of the people she sees today first came in over a decade ago; a good number now bring their children.

You are already in possession of everything you need to be well. Acupuncture helps you release the energy inside you.

Patients

Many of these patients have been coming for fifteen years or more.

"I have been blessed to work with Patty for over 15 years. Patty is an excellent practitioner, both with acupuncture and with Chinese herbs. The treatments are comfortable and relaxing. Patty is professional, knowledgable and kind. She has treated me for a variety of ailments and imbalances over the years, and in every instance the acupuncture and herbs have been a truly effective treatment modality. I wholeheartedly recommend Patty as an acupuncturist, herbalist and energy worker."
Mary Harbison
"I have been receiving acupuncture treatments from Patty for over 15 years. Through Patty's work I have received relief and healing for a variety of ailments — from a respiratory virus picked up while traveling to a sprained wrist to free-floating anxiety. I find Patty's work to be gentle and highly effective. The Chinese herbal supplements she has suggested as part of her treatment support the work long after I leave the treatment. Patty gets right to the core of the presenting issue, providing relief and healing in an efficient, proactive way. Her caring and expertise are a mainstay in my body care."
Cindy Morris
"Whether you seek relief from a common cold, stress, or a more serious chronic ailment, Patty and her needles will take care of everyone in the family. She has changed my life by allowing me to live pain free after enduring 25 years of back pain. Patty's treatments brought relief to my son's worst asthma episodes and helped eradicate chronic pneumonia. Thanks to her treatments my children are extremely healthy and don't ever suffer from a cold for more than a day or two, and our parents enjoy a higher quality of life. Patty's kindness and talent are a magic combination for our family's well being."
Laure McConnell
"Over the years, Patty has helped keep my body in balance and harmony, or bring it back into balance and harmony after a heath crisis such as surgery. Patty's acupuncture acumen is my go-to source of alternative medical help. Plus she's fun to be with and has a great laugh!"
Sue Thoele
"As a nurse I am on my feet all day, every day. A chronic problem so many nurses have because we are always on our feet is plantar fasciitis. Seeing Patty at least once a month not only keeps me working but keeps me out of pain. I am so thankful for the results of regular visits to Boulder Acupuncture. The benefits help so many different parts of my life!"
Toni Sugg, RN
"I've been going to see Patty at The Boulder Acupuncture Clinic since I was four years old. I started due to my asthma and allergies and Patty helped me learn that I'm lactose intolerant. In the following years, my asthma and allergies have improved and with Patty's amazing healing and gentle touch she has left a great impact on my life."
